Dimensione sends you its own CPE (ZTE ZXHN H6745).
PianetaFibra gives you whatever the OpenFiber delivery team has: that can range from various ZTE CPEs to even Fritzbox sometimes

From what I've understood so far, I won't go far wrong if I choose Dimensione or Planet Fibre. They seem both to be serious players.

In my experience often the choice (or wrong) of vendor is most obvious at the beginning/end of the relationship, and of course when there's an outage. In normal 'steady state' - as long as there's no over subscribing (as said, in our case we are the only two houses in the street, and it's a very unpopulated area) so hopefully there shouldn't be a contention ratio issue (but honestly as long as I get close to 2Gbps I'll be happy - and not because I "need", it but just to know I got the best service I could at the time, and will probably not need to upgrade for a few years to come. Out of interest though - what are the parameters that could affect the sync rate (if such concept exists) for a FTTH connection. With VDSL we paid close attention to Distance, SNR, attenuation etc. In the world of Fibre - all things being equal - would there still be a situation that the CPE syncs at a lower rate than 2.5gbps?

One other small (Fibre newbie) question comes to mind. I usually don't have any telephone connected to my line (when I attach a phone it only ever rings with telesales 😕) - but it's there for emergencies. With both providers there's this option for a VOIP number - would these usually be supplied with a local prefix (eg. 031 for Como) ? In any case, if there's no power, there's no phone line so for emergency I shouldn't really consider this right? What do you guys think about that? Is that just the way technology has progressed so, the old days of having always a phone connected in case you need to call emergency services have passed right (anyway by now we all use mobiles 100% of the time). I guess this would serve as a backup in case the mobile networks were down (though most seem to support wifi calling now), so for 2€ a month it's worth having.

For a backup solution I was also looking at Starlink as a viable option. There's the initial outlay for the kit (300€), but then, as far as I can tell, it could be offline till I need it with their 'roam' package. I could also take it with me for vacations etc. (solving another issue I have when I'm in the deep south of Ireland). Then again, 5G also does the job for much less if I get the right router.

Till there's optic signal there will be no problem at all.
It's completely different from VDSL.

The only way the CPE won't sync at 2,5Gbps is because the Ethernet cable between CPE and ONT is broken or Ethernet port malfunction.

You must always remember that there's no BMG on residential connections, and in GPON FTTH the 2,5G/1G bandwidth is for all the 64 possible ONTs that one GPON tree could have. (Split ratio is 1:64)

Yes there's a basic option that is pay-per-use, if I'm not mistaken, that guarantees you to have a landline number. The prefix will be that of your area of residence, in Italy the numbers necessarily follow this type of numbering.

xPON (at least up to 50G-PON ZTE, who knows in the future) doesn't really have any kind of dynamic modulation.

I was quite sure Wind was the wrong choice (as confirmed unanimously here) - TIM was not in the game, and Fastweb seemed also not to be for 2.5Gpbs. I hadn't heard of these other providers (being a 'foreigner') so I was using Trustpilot as a source but now I feel pretty confident to take the next step.

The outage that affected my neighbours was a rat having chewed through a cable. Not sure if that's a common problem (you'd think they would be well shielded), never faced any such thing with my Copper (main hazard was a car reversing into the TIM street cabinet - now it looks like the tower of Pisa 🙂 ) , but it makes me think more about a backup solution since they were down for almost 2 weeks (with Wind3's fantastic customer support to thank for this).

About the router I'm still undecided. For the Wifi element I have 6 TP-Link Deco M5s covering the home today (have very thick walls so run CAT 6 to each of the 3 floors and then 2 mesh devices per floor) - was going to upgrade them to X60s to be sure to have a surplus of Wifi bandwidth and not introduce a bottleneck there.

As far as router/modem capabilities I've no need for Port fowarding, QOS, dynamic DNS (anyway I understood we'll get a static IP for free?) , just a device that the device is mainstream and well supported in Italy to take new iterations of the network standards as and when they are released. Even if they are mostly all coming from China (except of course Fritz), I'm guessing the Network Providers have their list of preferred/supported manufacturers, which ZTE seems to be part of, so taking their router, since my technical needs are quite simple (2x 2.5Gbps ports, 1 each for WAN/LAN) and external ONT (to avoid overheating issues I've read of with internal SPFs) I may as well run with that. What's nice is that there's no lock-in to the router so if my needs change I can just send it back to them. Not sure if then they reduce the monthly charge but no big deal.

I think I'll skip the landline option then. We have TIM mobile in 5G which is well served here. Need to see what they offer me when I send the disdetta for the Fibre. I'll lose their unlimited Unica offer but looking at the stats, 100Gb per line/month will be more than enough so I reckon with 4x10€ a month each we'll be sorted + 30€ for the new line - it's more or less at what I pay TIM today. Anyone know how you can actually SPEAK to a human at TIM for commercial topics? I keep getting their bloody 'Angie' bot which wastes so much time, and I don;t really want to spend an hour in their nearest shop. Is there a secret way to have a conversation with a human about what packages I can have for my mobile needs (sorry it's a bit off-topic for this forum but thought I'd ask . Thanks in advance 🙂

Time to time it's a problem that needs to be faced of.
Usually shielded cable aren't used, but after few times OF can decide to use them.

The external ONT is provided by the ISP, you don't need to buy it.

The most common problem with SFP ONT isn't the overheating but firmware BUG that the BIG Italian ISP aren't interested in solving. (** Cof cof ** Wind3 ** Cof cof **)

With Dimensione there isn't any reduction on the monthly charge if you send the router back.

Unfortunately for you, fortunately in general, Tim doesn't sell connection on Piano Italia 1G OpenFiber.
Tim and OpenStream service don't work to good together, the ISPs you're looking at are better in every way 😉

Alla fine ho optato per Pianeta Fibra, data la loro affinità con Aruba, con cui ho già una buona esperienza.
Non mi resta che decidere se optare per la connessione a 2,5 o 6.0 (10 Gbps downgradato). Considerando la modesta differenza nell'abbonamento mensile, sono tentato di optare per la 6 Gbps, anche se a casa non c'è nulla che possa superare i 2,5 Gbps a causa delle limitazioni del Wi-Fi 6. Ciononostante, almeno se lo faccio ora, sono pronto per il futuro passaggio al Wi-Fi 7.
Pianeta Fibra mi permetterà di effettuare l'upgrade in seguito, ma probabilmente dovranno cambiare l'ONT e potrebbero applicare una tariffa di upgrade che potrei evitare scegliendo subito la linea più veloce.
L'unica preoccupazione/dubio, riguarderebbe la stabilità della connessione ad alta velocità. Dovrei preoccuparmi di altri aspetti che ti vengono in mente? 2,5 Gbps sono un'opzione più sicura al momento?

6Gbit is not downgraded, it's a full 10/2,5G XGS-PON but they sell a 6G to be more relistic about the achievable speeds.

Taking advantage of a 10G connection is definetely not a metter of wifi techology.
You need cabled devices.

So, I pulled the trigger on the Pianeta Fibra Diva 6000 promotion. Even if [for now] I 'only' manage to upgrade my upload from 1Gbps to 2.5Gbps - it's fantastic value. Then when prices come down for 10Gb equipped hardware, I can make full use of the connection.

I have a technical question if I may.

I was thinking of adding a Deco BE25 router/mesh which gives me Wifi 7 and a pair of 2.5gbps ports. Although it claims to support PPPOE I'm trying to understand from the documentation if there's a way to set the user credentials inside the Deco master unit.

It would help me to plan by understanding whether, when OpenFibre connect me to the POP and install the ONT - do they have to configure something on the ONT (ie. it's not just a passive media convertor) - or would the authentication need to take place on the router?

Basically, if I were to connect a PC with a 2.5gb Ethernet Port to the ONT, would I get a class C DHCP address (and DNS etc.) from the ONT? Does the public IP get assigned to the ONTs Optical port and is NATed by the ONT? I guess I'm trying to avoid having an unneccessary router (as I do today) just acting as a modem, when the media converter might be doing the job of the modem

I was also wondering if, when the installation is done, and the ONT (which will have a 10gb Ethernet Port) is cabled to a 2.5gb router - does this negotiated speed somehow 'stick' so that Pianeta Fibra will create a profile with 2.5gb, or can I later on swap the router out with a 10gb device and hopefully it will re-synch at 10gbps (even if traffic is capped at 6gpbs)

Last question. By opting for the 6.0/2.5 product - even if the minimum speeds are probably the same as the 2.5/1.0 product - could I reasonably expect to get 2.5 most of the time (considering that I have a contracted for max 6.0 bandwidth)?

All feels a bit silly talking about these speeds when in the real world [today] there's hardly any benefit for a home user to have such bandwidth - but I guess I'm amongst nerds here 😁 so you'll understand the quest for having the best connection I can reasonably have without spending a fortune - which I think this Diva offer seems to be.

One of the ethernet ports must be used for the connection to the ONT as WAN and yes it can be used as router: it supports PPPoE and VLAN TAG.

The PPPoE must be set on a router.
OpenFiber brings you fiber to your home and then gives you an ONT.
The ONT is only responsible for optical-electrical signal transduction and authentication to the OLT in the POP.

No, the ONT doesn't have any DHCP server, it's completely transparent.

No, the IP gets assigned by ISP's DHCP Server.

OpenFiber uses an L2VPN to transport traffic to the ISP's drop-off/collection point, then everything is controlled by the ISP.

No, the only link that will be capped at 2,5G is the ethernet link between ONT and router, if later you buy and swap with a 10G router you will access the full 10G connection.

The technical profile that is activated is 10G/2.5G.
The peak speeds that can be reached are around 7/8Gbps, considering the network overheads (PPPoE, Ethernet, TCP/IP).

Of course I'm talking about peak speeds that aren't always reachable, it depends above all on the servers you are communicating with.
