Hi there guys, back again for some advice.
I thinking that I'd like to try and get rid of the fastgate modem on my ftth for something else that allows me to choose which dns server I use.
But I was thinking could I not connect my asus ax-11000 to the web with a little gpon terminal the same kind that tiscali (my previous isp) supplied.
I understand that is not gonna be 2,5.

Cheers!

yellowdaisydoo when you subscribed to Fastweb did you also tick the option for “modem libero”? Otherwise they won’t give you support for that, I don’t remember if it was discussed in your previous thread.
If you don’t have that, you have to face two issues: you need an ONT and you need the Asus to support DHCP option 60 (something I’m not sure of).

HI @x_term yeah, I did specify modem libero. I just did a quick google and i don't think my Asus supports option 60. With Tiscali I had to configure the IPTV settings. I thought it would work the same way for fastweb.

yellowdaisydoo you should try to call them up and ask to install an ONT to use your own router, it’s free of charge.

They should book an appointment with an on field technician.

Good luck.. sometimes they make a fuss.

Settings for fastweb flashfiber are quite easy.. it’s just DHCP on WAN interface without a VLAN TAG.

Once they enable modem libero they ask for its MAC address and you don’t need DHCP option 60.

thanks gandalf2016 actually i just checked the contract
        I did choose modem fastweb.
So what are my options? I'm trying to force them to do it anyway but I don't have much hope.

yellowdaisydoo Usually Fastweb doesn't allow "modem libero" if you didn't asked it during activation. So you can try to ask them but you need to be very lucky...

Otherwise you need a configuration that allows you to:

          • change gpon serial on ONT side (and also your ONT need to be compatible with the OLT, e.g. in my case, Nokia SFP ONT doesn't work with Huawei OLT - it goes O5 but no connection - , but Technicolor and Huawei SFP sticks do it)
          • change mac address and add dhcp option 60 on router side (or the line, in any case, doesn't work)

I didn't understand if you are connected to Fastweb network or to OpenFiber network (does your Fastgate sync at 1Gbps or at 2.5Gbps)?

If you sync at 2.5Gbps and you want to keep this speed, further requirements needed...

Alfoele I didn't understand if you are connected to Fastweb network or to OpenFiber network (does your Fastgate sync at 1Gbps or at 2.5Gbps)?

            FlashFiber, from previous discussion.

So, you are connected to Flash Fiber and I suppose you sync at 2.5Gbps. At the moment I have no information about a router that allows this speed. If you want 2.5Gbps you need to support additional requirements:

            • a Gpon SFP stick with Lantiq chipset (it supports HSGMII, so it syncs at 2.5Gbps on the LAN side) like Huawei MA5671A that I'm using at the moment (that stick need to be modified, but some other SFP stick exist). At the moment no GPON ethernet ONT has ethernet interface faster than 1Gbps
            • an Ubiquiti switch (specific models only) able to support HSGMII that bridges the line to a 10gbps router (cage on GPON side syncs at 2.5Gbps and cage connected to the router syncs at 10Gbps)
            • an alternative to the previous solution (Ubiquiti switch) is a Linux machine (or freebsd and some other os) with a specific 10gbps Broadcom NIC card (you need also recompile NIC adapter driver and change the NIC configuration to make it sync at 2.5Gbps)

For further info about the solutions above (hardware needed, how to, etc...) please read this guide (Italian language only)

the whatsapp tech guy stood his ground so I've set the wheels in motion to leave fastweb, lets see what they say when they call to try and change my mind
if they do change their minds and help me out i'll let you know

            25 giorni dopo

so... this has been an absolute nightmare. I started the procedure to close my Fastweb account hoping that when they called to ask why and confirm I'd be able to sort something out. They did call a few weeks later, the lady suggested I open a new subscription, which happens to cost less than my current plan, choosing to use my own modem. Which I did by calling Fastweb and signing up over the phone. But since then whenever I contact Fastweb to ask what's happening no one has ever been able to find the contract I signed up to, even though I have it in PDF. Last week a guy from Fastweb called to say I can't have two contracts on the same name and if I want to change I'll have to wait till the old is terminated fully, ie I'm without internet and then wait for the new line to be installed. After a short conversation about this, he put the phone down on me. This freaked me out a little so I then called Fastweb, to try to speak to someone, not an easy thing to do as their support line takes you down the rabbit hole of self-service. I explained the call I had just received and I was told that what had been said about not being allowed to have two accounts under the same name was not true. This time they suggested I stop the closure of the existing account until the new has been sorted out. I agreed to do this and the operator said to call back Monday to see what the situation was.
So Monday, yesterday, I called back and basically I was told that no one had asked to closure to be stopped and they still can’t see my new contract own the system, two weeks after I signed up.
So now I’m waiting to be called up by Fastweb to confirm that the closure has been stopped.
A this point I’m so pissed off at them I want to move to a new provider.
Their support is useless, every time you call you here a different answer and I was told by multiple people at Fastweb that I could open a new contract and that would be the best way forward and I wouldn’t be without a connection but in the end its all turned out to so so wrong,
Has anyone got anything good to say about Vodafone? They atre offering 2,5gbps now.
